Rock Climbing in Quebec is wicked. A new Crag in Developement. WILD WEST WALL, left of described routes in the guidebook.
My rock-climbing trip to Quebec will never be forgotten. I got together with my Best Man, Don Puttee, my first real climbing partner. I spent one week of hardcore climbing on some wild granite, and to my belief that it is some sort of Sandstone/Quartzite rock in Weir, that got my adrenaline flowing. If it weren’t for the help of Brian Cole, some of this area would not be what it is today.
The climbing is steep and sustained climbing, similar to that of the Back of the Lake, Lake Louise, AB. Don & I attempted the classic line for the area, known as Black & White 5.11b 3pitchs. The sun was hot that day, breaking records at 30 Celsius, directly on our backs at 10am, so we decided to find shade, after A0 our way up sweaty holds.
Climbing is all about beating the rock with your own power and endurance. I have started to set up this area for people to lead the climbs to the top. The scramble above can be done to set up top ropes, but is discouraged, if a climbers doesn’t have the skill for harder climbs, then that of their own limits, they will find their feet sliding, creating polished rock for the more experienced climber to deal with later.
The Rock in this area feels soft and sandy, it will erode and polish over time, if we all watch the routes we climb and keep them within reason, to your personal limits.
